One of the best cgi animated films of all time. - Over the Hedge Reviews

I watched the screener last night with my brother and the movie was better than I expected. The animation was done well. The voices nailed the characters and it was just plain funny. I can really enjoy a comedy, but only laugh out loud a few times. This movie was non-stop fun and great for the whole family. There weren't as many jokes that would go over young ones head like in Shrek. All in all I was very impressed and would rank it up there with Ice Age and Shrek. Enjoy!

Hedge your bets for a good time - Over the Hedge Reviews

There's a significant difference between the philosphies of the two biggest animation studios in America today: PDI (now Dreamworks) Animation and Pixar Studios. Pixar believes in telling timeless tales that always seem to be original. Dreamworks Animation believes in telling contemporary stories about events in the present and seem to follow formula. There is nothing wrong with either philosophy (except that more of Pixar's work will be deemed classic), except that Dreamworks has a trump card that they always seem to get close to, but rarely use: Satire. Over The Hedge, based on the comic strip that is nothing but satire, is kinda like one of it's characters named Hammy who always is going in the right direction, but always seems to get distracted by a cookie. It has some satirical bite to it, but it keeps begging to do more. There are many missed opportunities to really dig into suburban life, consumerism, advertising, and urban paranoia. But it is genuinely funny and more or less likable. The film starts off with R.J. the raccoon (Bruce Willis), who after losing a battle with a vending machine makes a terrible mistake by trying to steal from Vincent the Bear (Nick Nolte). Vincent's loot gets destroyed and gives R.J. a week to come up with it's equivilent otherwise the menu will be replaced with him. But where to get food that fast. Alas, there's a new suburban development full of rich food-filled people to nab from. But he'll need help. Cut to Verne the Turtle (Gary Shandling), Hammy the Squirrel (Steve Carrell), Stella the Skunk (Wanda Sykes), and an assortment of Porcupines and Possums. Fresh from hibernation, they have awoken to find a "scary-looking thing" has shown up in their woods. It is a hedge, but why would they know that? To quell the fear of it, they call it Steve until R.J. introduces it to them, and the possibilites to eat on the other side. But oh, are there dangers from cars, kids, dogs, and most of all humans, including The Verminator (Thomas Hayden Church), who creates some of the most painful-looking traps I have ever seen this side of a heist movie. So why go over the hedge? Because RJ gets them hooked on junk food, and as any American teenager can tell you, one just ain't ever enough. I guess you can tell where this is going, which is sad because there's not many surprises when it comes to the story. The comedy is all there, including a scene involving a hyper Hammy and an energy drink that had me in tears. Using mainly comedians like Shandling, Carrell, and Sykes allows for the comedy to feel original even when some is not. I especially liked Carrell manic voicework that definately caught the ADHD span of Hammy, but also his genuine heart. The animation is clean, but perhaps a little too clean at the same time. The whole point of animation in these types of films is allow the belief of disbelief to live out in front of your eyes. While yes, we believe that these characters can talk to each other (Why is it that all the animals speak the same language and understand each other perfectly?), the film's locations (even the woods, doesn't seem to be filled with dirt or grime. Perhaps this is a small thing to complain about, but it still caught my attention and took me out of the action. All in all, this is definately a great film to bring the kids to, and you'll have a great time as well. And just maybe, you'll realize just how addictive those nacho-flavored chips really are.

A lot better than i expected - Over the Hedge Reviews

I tend to like animated films in general. But this one really stood out for me. To be honest, I was never a huge fan of Dreamworks' animation studio. The movies were pretty good, but never as good as Disney. They lack the cute and cuddly flavor that pulls you into the story and makes you love the characters. But this film was excellent. I loved the story, the characters, everything. The animation quality was also really impressive. It didn't have the super shiny fakeness that Dreamworks films normally do. The whole criticizm of suburban living and people was hilarious and realistic despite seeming over the top. The poor little animals. Okay, so yeah. See this movie. It was great. Not just for kids either.

Dull - Over the Hedge Reviews

I ended up leaving after about 40 minutes. It was dull and predictable. I liked the actors and the animation but the story line and jokes were rehashes. There seemed to be no creativity in the writing.

Worst. movie. ever. - Over the Hedge Reviews

Hopefully, in my life time, SOMEONE will make a film that is truly child appropriate. I might have to do it myself. One small example: early on in the film, a bear delivers a terrifying death threat to a racoon whose attempted to steak his food, He purrs, full screen, "I"m going to kill you." Why do we, as parents, accept this as appropriate material for children? This is simply a typical Hollywood formula (action film with violence, snotty women and cars flying through the air) dressed up in cartoon characters. Doesn't matter to me what "the message" is suppose to be--the impact of seeing and hearing death threats on myself and my children is NOT entertainment. Positioning violence, revenge and dangerous situations as entertainment is way bad for our collective souls.

Hilarious family film - Over the Hedge Reviews

This animated cartoon is one of the few that is excellent for children of all ages while still being captivating fun for adults too. If you only go to see one family movie this summer, this should be the one!

Heart warming and wonderful - Over the Hedge Reviews

This was indeed a wonderful assortment of charactors and fun with a message of kindness vs. selfish. We loved every minute of it!

Saving animal-kind - Over the Hedge Reviews

I took my 4yr. old to see this movie. She like the funny little animals and the music by Ben Folds. I, on the other hand, like the storyline and most of the jokes; there's one about Dr. Phil in one of the scenes. RJ, the raccoon; voice by Bruce Willis, steals a bundle of food from a bear name Vince; voice by Nick Notle. RJ promises Vince that he could replace all the food by the next full moon. So off he goes with a shopping list (it would have been funny if the shopping list was made from a Wal-mart ad) and comes to a new neighborhood. There RJ mets a group of other woodland animals that have been sleeping through the winter. He gets the idea that he could use them to gather up food to bring back to Vince. RJ explains the new environment of homes and the concept of savaging from them. There are different action scenes that take place (my favorite is the red wagon and the dog). Towards the end of the film, RJ has a change of heart and come to the aid of his new family. "Over the Hedge" is a good-clean, family film.

Over the hedge is over the top! - Over the Hedge Reviews

Over The Hedge is over the top with animation, visual effects, sound production as well as story line. The visual quality almost made me forget these weren't REAL characters! The winsome creatures are charming and their antics are hysterical. The story line offers a cute "silly" plot, while cleverly developing an underlying "serious", altruistic theme. This movie guarantees the entire family laughter and a fun-filled family time, with different layers of meaning and appreciation for varying age groups. All together a delight!

HOwever, I have to admit my two fav characters were Wanda Sykes Skunk and Hammy!! Gotta love the squirell!! Hammy made the whole movie!!! Shatner did a great job, as well as the other actors. THe animation was way better than Shrek, the acting was way better than Shrek, all in all, a funny movie and way better than Shrek! Mind you, I love Shrek, but when you see this? I guarantee you will laugh till it hurts!! Sykes was funny! her timing was just pefect, and her cartoon character funny! So,,, FIRE IN THE HOLE!! POOMMMMPPPFF!!!! What has happened to animated movies? - Over the Hedge Reviews

The Late 90's and early 2000's had a string of Great animated Movies - Toy Story, Shrek, Finding Nemo, Ice Age, Shark Tale, and The Incredibles among others. However, Starting last year with Madagascar and continuing this year with Ice Age 2 and now Over the Hedge - there is a trend to mediocrity. The Main problem with Over the Hedge is that it is just not very funny - and the scenes that are funny are pretty much copies of other animated movies. I do have to say the sound sysyem in the theater I was in was terrible, so I couldn't here that well - but I don't think I missed much. Kids will like this movie because there is some funny physical comedy, but there is non of the wry in jokes that made the earlier movies fun for adults. For adults I would recomend skiping this movie, turning on your TV and watching The Simpsons or Family Guy instead - They are both far funnier.

Absolutely amazing! can't sum it up any better! - Over the Hedge Reviews

Most of the time, I never really get to sit down and write a review for a movie. But, you know, I am going to set aside a few minutes to share some thoughts on this film. I was so amazed by this movie. This movie really made me smile from beginning to end. Trust me, I am not someone you often see smiling at a movie or being scared at a movie. Never really show too much emotion is what I'm really trying to say. But, I couldn't hold myself back from smiling and laughing with this movie. The movie was beautifully crafted in every detail, from the animation all the way to the voices for the animals. There was never a single dull moment in this film. There is something captivating for everyone. Also, for those who have seen "Citizen Kane", a little special treat in there from Ozzie that I picked up on (brought a huge smile to my face!). I will recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. This movie definetely will find a way to wedge itself somewhere in your heart and mind. I will be attending this movie again during the week and definetely will be one of the first people in line to buy this movie when it comes out on DVD! It was that good, people. Please take my word for it!

Good movie for kids, but - Over the Hedge Reviews

This is no blockbuster. The animation was great - it was very visually enjoyable, but that was about it. Some of the dialogue was clever but there were several moments where the theater was silent for 10 minutes at a time and no one was laughing, and it was a full theater. It had it's funny moments, but I would not go so far as to say it was a "funny movie". The squirrel was probably the funniest and most clever character. Dreamworks is almost too concerned with how their movies look, rather than make a "good movie". Their animators are brilliant, don't get me wrong. But overall the movie was pretty dull. My kids enjoyed it, but most kids aren't critics - they just enjoy cartoons.

Great family movie. you must see it - Over the Hedge Reviews

I took my 3 1/2 year old to see over the edge and he loved it. It's rare when I can get him to watch a whole movie without his attention span plummeting. There are a lot of jokes that are geared towards adults(The adults were lauging more than the kids) but it was still great anyway. If you liked Madagascar you will LOVE this. highly recommended!

Go on, take a peek - Over the Hedge Reviews

Who would've thought Bruce Willis would be playing a troubled NYPD officer and a michievous raccoon both in the same year? Well he has, and done both quite well. Bruce Willis, along with Eugene Levy, Nick Nolte, Wanda Sykes, & many others appear in the all-new Dreamworks animation, 'Over The Hedge'. Which is brought to us by the director of 1998's 'Antz', Tim Johnson, and the producer of last year's hit 'Madagascar' and the writer of the upcoming 'Charlotte's Web', Karey Kirkpatrick. In 'Over The Hedge' we are taken into what is left of some woodland creature's home, now invaded by suburban life and surrounded by an encompassing hedge. They now have a dilemma. Where are they going to find food? That's where Bruce Willis' character, RJ the raccoon comes in. He explains to them on the other side of the hedge that there are plenty of delicious varieties of food. Including Hammy the squirrel's (Steve Carell) new favorite, nacho cheese flavored chips. While Verne the turtle (Garry Shandling) is skeptical and warns the others that it isn't safe over the hedge they all go along with RJ anyways in hopes of retrieving tasty treats. What they are unaware of is that RJ only wants to gather food for a hungry bear (Nick Nolte) so he himself doesn't get killed. 'Over The Hedge' is nowhere near other animated films like 'Shrek' and 'Toy Story' in terms of greatness. It lacks a certain quality that is inexplicable. But it's still highly enjoyable. The animation itself is very good, there's lots of funny moments for both children and adults to enjoy, and the story is good. (Although there are a few flaws in it, but nothing major.) The good thing is 'Over The Hedge' isn't being made out to be what those other films were. From being based on a comic strip it sure turned out to be pretty good. If you haven't seen it already, I suggest you take some time and go see what's over the hedge. You might just see something you like.

Steve carrol is the funniest man alive! - Over the Hedge Reviews

Hammy stole the show. I thought this movie was very well done. Visually, it's very impressive and has a pretty good story line to go with it. It also has some inside jokes like Shrek...overall, I had a good time and some much needed laughs.

Over the hedge with an edge - Over the Hedge Reviews

I have to say this was a pretty cool action filled animation that kept my 3 year old on the edge of her seat. She stated this was her favorite movie ever. It was fun to watch. Bruce Willis and Wanda Sykes filled their characters voices well.

Family, comedy, and more! - Over the Hedge Reviews

"Over the Hedge" is filled with undeniable comedy and fun! But another fabulous thing about the film is that it's all about family! The movie kind of shows the things that true families should and shouldn't do, and would and wouldn't do. A few examples are that each family member is different, and that family members should try to give of themselves to their own family, bi it their help, time ore even their own life! I've seen plenty of films concerning families, but "Over the Hedge" totally rocks the house! Not to mention all the comedy that comes with it! Oh my gosh! I was laughing every few minutes throughout the entire movie! It was soooooo funny!!! Besides a few brief sequences of rude humor, "Over the Hedge" is a relatively clean movie filled with loads of good morals, values, and FUN!!! I would recommend this film to just about anyone!

Not perfect but still a really good movie - Over the Hedge Reviews

This movie was really well directed. This story had a spark that not all animated movie have. It was a really good beginning, middle and end. I was laughing throughout the movie. This movie is good for kids who like animated movie. Watch out The Davinci Code, Over the Hedge is comming after you in the race for 1st in the box office! This movie was the best. Even though I didn't give the movie an A+ I still want people to go see the movie now!!

Don't trim the hedge! - Over the Hedge Reviews

You've got to see this movie if you have a soul. This movie will tickle it till it bursts out laughing on the floor. This isn't only a cute, cuddly hyperactive animal movie, but it's sure to bring a smile to the sci fi fan in you. Miss the good old fun of animated characters getting smashed and coming out unscathed? This movie is what's up, doc!

Over the hedge takes on da vinci?s code - Over the Hedge Reviews

The incredible animation and imagination of DreamWorks brings Over the Hedge. Over the Hedge is compiled with an all-star lineup that will not disappoint. This movie will bring in a wide audience but preferably a family occasion kind of movie. The characters are very intriguing and bring in the actors tone intact with the character?s attitude. Hilarious story that?s runtime is short which is 1 hour and 30 minutes. Notable cast members to name a few like Bruce Willis and Steve Carell are main parts of this whole movie. Over the Hedge is about woodland creatures trying to get over the hedge into a newly discovered neighborhood. Also going up against a animal control villain that is trying to stop the animals from achieving their goal from the sneaky raccoon played by Bruce Willis. Banding up with his animal friends the raccoon named RJ brings in Hammy a squirrel, Stella the skunk, Ozzie the possum, and many others. I really recommend Over the Hedge because it?s such a great animation movie that would likely be seen by a family. But the question for Over the Hedge is could it be able to "Take a Stand" on next week with the much anticipated Marvel superhero adaptation X-Men 3: the Last Stand?

Invest in this hedge - Over the Hedge Reviews

Dreamworks new animated film is funnier than "Madagascar" but not as funny as "Shrek". However, the animation is far superior to both. Taken from the comic strip of the same name, "Hedge" is a cartoon environmental culture clash. Spurred on by the con artist "RJ the Raccoon", a band of cute critters work together to steal human food for themselves (actually for RJ). Lessons are learned (value of family, in particular), villains are defeated and the animals survive for the inevitable sequel. Unlike many other films of this genre, the adult jokes are kept to a minimum and are much more effective for it. The animation really is terrific. The depth and detail is pretty amazing. The Dreamworks animation department continues to impress. All the vocal work led by Bruce Willis, William Shatner, Gary Shandling, Wanda Sykes, and Steve Carell is very well done. One problem for kids comes late in the film. A slow motion sequence will probably have to be explained otherwise, "Hedge" is a treat for the kids and should be enjoyed by parents as well.

Great animation - bad story - Over the Hedge Reviews

To take that much fabulous animation, and use such a terrible story... shame. Voices could have been better too. I laughed some. But the movie is not a keeper. Won't buy the DVD, probably wait until it is on cable. Was hoping to see more of the daily comicstrip that I love.

Enjoyed myself - Over the Hedge Reviews

I can honestly say that I enjoyed myself in this movie. It had good jokes, not as many as I had hoped for, but there are still a good amount in the movie. The most memerable towards the end of the movie, but I won't tell you what it is. If your kids want to go see this movie, then take them, or if you want to go spend some time with the family, then go see this movie. Worth the money.
